Margaret Maldonado’s book JACKSON FAMILY VALUES part 2

My summery continued

After Hazel filed for divorce and moved out, Jermaine moved in with Margaret. Margaret starts to realize that Jermaine is not very good with money. She falls more and more into the role of Jermaine’s manager. She finds that Jermaine owes the Inland Revenue a huge tax bill and starts sorting out his finances, hiring new accounts and firing the previous ones.  Not only did Jermaine owe the Inland Revenue, he also had alot of debts from his tour and album. He thought he would generate on his solo tour the same huge money that Victory brought in, so he had mortgaged his house to finance the tour. When this didn’t happen he was left with huge debts.

Jermaine thought he was a big star who could earn huge amounts from record sales and concerts but everyone  including his agents knew he wasn’t. Jermaine’s lifestyle far exceed his income and as a result his finances were a mess.

As part of sorting out Jermaine’s finances, Margaret downsized their rented home, getting a small 2 bed-roomed condo in a complex opposite Randy’s large extravagant home on Wiltshire Boulevard.

Jermaine was now recording his second album for Arista and also working with Tito, Jackie and Randy on what would become 2300 Jackson Street which was being recorded at Tito’s home in Encino.

Margaret slowly starts to meet the rest of the Jackson family. Her first meeting with Katherine at Hayvenhurst does not go well and it takes many months for Katherine to accept Margaret.

With Margaret now looking after Jermaine’s finances she sees that Jermaine can’t keep up with child support payments to Hazel . Hazel starts to come after Jermaine for the money, her father Berry Gordy hires attorneys to force Jermaine to pay child support.

Margaret ends up dealing with Hazel, sorting out the payments and makes sure she gets regular cheque’s.

In October 1987 an earthquake hits LA. Jermaine and Margaret are living in a high rise condo complex and don’t feel safe after the earthquake. By now Katherine has warmed to Margaret and even though they are not married, Katherine allows Jermaine to move back into Hayvenhurst with Margaret and the two children. They move in early 1988. Margaret and the boys use Janet’s old room.

Margaret and boys settle in at Hayvenhurst, which is a big step up from the small condo they had previously lived in.

(the next few pages describe the house routine, the layout of the house, the animals etc. Michael and Latoya are still living there)

About 3 weeks after Margaret moves in an incident with Jack Gordon and Joseph occurs. They had been talking in a room when it escalates to an argument which Katherine goes to diffuse. While the argument continues Margaret comforts Latoya who starts talking about Katherine. “you don’t know this family Margaret. My mother is behind all of this, You think she is just the sweetest woman, but she is the one who is pushing Josephs buttons” . The argument eventually ends but after this Latoya starts to confide in Margaret.

Latoya said she had spent months on the road with her father, performing shows with two other girls. Whichever one he was sleeping with is the one who got the best treatment, got the best room and sang the leads. Latoya told Katherine about this but Katherine did nothing.

These were Latoya’s last days Hayvenhurst, she moved to New York with Jack Gordon.
