The first 5 chapters of the book, up until the Motown audition,all focus on escape from Gary. Katherine & Joseph tried to escape from Gary in 1960, but their attempt to go to Seattle didnt work out. So once they saw the boys performing in the house, they focused on using their childrens talents to escape from Gary instead. and that folks is how the lifelong obligation for Michael to provide for the family began. and where the current fight for Michaels money stems from.
