The Story Behind My First Tattoo

I used to think I would never get a tattoo. I have a birthmark on my face and have dealt with the stares, the pointing, the rude comments all my life. I never thought I would be strong enough to deal with all that again by deciding to permanently put something on skin.

HIStory era came along and I  became obsessed with the symbol. Then I found the fan community and my self esteem and self confidence grew and being a fan was something I didn’t have to hide as there were so many like me out there. My confidence grew , and I started thinking maybe having a tattoo would not be so bad after all.

For about 4 years in the summer I would get Henna Tattoos of the HIStory symbol. To my surprise, the reactions were no where near what I was expecting. Maybe because it was my choice to mark my skin, maybe I was becoming a stronger person, maybe it was because tattoos were becoming more mainstream, maybe all the above, but when the Henna eventually faded I started missing my “tattoo” .

By 2003, I had finally decided to get a real proper tattoo, and I was looking for “my” design, something which had personal meaning, something Michael or connected to him, but which told a story. Like everyone, I had heard all the stories of people getting random designs, just cos, which they later regretted. I didn’t want that to happen to me. I knew that when I found “my” design, it would be something I would be proud of years later, that it would not be a stupid mistake I make in my 20’s which in my 30’s /40’s would be removed by laser.

I decided I wanted the dancing feet image, like on the MJJ PRODUCTIONS logo, but I didn’t want the exact same design as MJJP. This image has alot of personal meaning. I knew that I would find a design of this image I liked somehow, somewhere and I wouldn’t just rush into getting a real tattoo.

November 2003

Excitement in the air, new music sort of, The Ultimate Collection is released. Everything is great in the world of Michael Jackson, fun times on the fan sites.

17 November 2003

One More Chance CD single is released.

18 November 2003

After work I go to HMV and buy OMC CD single. On the bus on the way home, I excitedly examine the new CD My heart leaps as I see the cover photo, THIS is the image I have been waiting for. I can’t wait to get home and play the CD as I had forgotten to bring my portable CD player with me. I had not listened to any leaks online so I had not heard the new song yet. I sat on the bus, all excited, when my phone rang. It was one of my friends, crying , very upset. Suddenly my world is turned up side down. How can this happen again??? An arrest warrant has been issued for Michael and Neverland is being searched……

I start crying too, I’m still on the bus, still holding my brand new unplayed OMC CD, while trying to make sense of what my friend is telling me. I get home and my flatmate is crying too, she is also a fan. We turn on the TV to watch the news. That first night that’s all we had. Back then we did not have a laptop or home internet, mobile phones did not have internet and the internet cafe was closed. So the two of us just sat then, getting text updates and watching the hourly news bulletins.

That night I knew the time had come for me to get my tattoo. When news broke about Michael going to court for the first time in January 2004, I knew I had to be there, my first trip to California with my friends. So I had to plan my tattoo carefully. With my friends help I found a good tattoo shop and decided when to get it.

I believed in Michael so much that on 29 December 2003, 41 days after the allegations broke, 10 days before heading to California for Michael’s arraignment. I got his name permanently tattooed on my arm……

WHY DID FANS FAINT AT MICHAEL JACKSON CONCERTS?

It’s a combination of many different things.

The concerts where the there is footage of people fainting are mostly standing concerts.

This means that all the concert tickets were the same price, and to get to the front row / section you had to be at the top of the queue. Fans would often sleep on the street overnight, outside the venue, in order to be at the top of queue.
When you sleep out, in a queue, you really don’t get much sleep, and it can be very uncomfortable as you are sitting /lying on the ground in just a sleeping bag, leaning against a metal barrier and surrounded by people talking.

This means that by the time it’s the day of the concert, you are already tired, and you still have many hours before you enter the arena.

On the day of the concert, many people don’t eat or drink normally because they don’t want to leave the queue in case they lose their place.

When you are queuing, you try to sit down as much as possible, but as the time gets closer to when the gates open, the queue gets tighter and tighter as people try to push forward and you have to stand.

By the time the gates open, you will most likely have been standing for many hours, being pushed and squashed in an excited atmosphere.

Once the gates open and you finally make your way into the stadium and find your “spot, you still have another 2 or 3 hours before Michael is actually onstage.

All of this plus the excitement of seeing Michael is why people faint. It’s because they are dehydrated, exhausted, being pushed and squashed and overcome with seeing Michael.

One of the reasons I always tried to be at the front is, despite what you might think, it’s actually the safest place. When you are are the front, security can see you easier and can help you quickly and when they hand out water you are more likely to get some if you at the front.

For the World Music Awards, in London in November 2006 I went to the venue at around 1am the night before, and was number 25 in the queue. Me and my friend had sleeping bags with us and we sat on the ground, leaning against the metal barriers to try to get as much sleep as possible.

At about 7am, my friend stayed in the queue and I took our sleeping bags back to our hotel and got some food etc. When I got back to the queue, my friend went and did the same.

We queued up all day outside and then inside the venue, and at about 5pm they let us into the arena and I managed to get at the front barrier. You can see me in the crowd footage, at the very end as Michael leaves the stage.

That particular time was very hard and you had to be strong to survive all the pushing and shoving and the heat of everyone being packed soo tightly. Just after Michael left the stage after getting the award and as Rihanna started singing, it got really crazy around me. You can see it if you look very closely at the front of the crowd. People started fainting all around me and security and paramedics gathered really quickly and started pulling people out of the crowd. About 10 people got pulled out; cos it was very very hot and people were really pushing a lot and Michael had just been onstage.

When you are still queuing outside the venue, you start talking to people near you. It’s better if you are with friends but even if you are on your own, it’s very acceptable to say to the either the person in front or behind you “do you mind if I go to the toilet and can you keep my place for me”. After queuing for hours and hours, most people have no problem with this, as more than likely they will want to do the same.

There comes a point in the day, when you know that you can’t leave your place in the queue. By talking to security you will find out when they will let you into the venue and you know you have to take one last pee break. After the last pee break, we normally decide not to eat or drink anymore. Once the venue is open and you have your spot, you won’t be able to pee for many hours, most likely until after the concert.

As for leaving venues after concerts, its doesn’t take that much time to leave. Concert venues are very organised venues and have many exits out of the building. The stewards at the venue will assign a particular entrance to each section and it’s a one way system.

After the World Music Awards, some of my friends made it back to Michael’s hotel at the same time as he did and saw him go into the hotel. I took a little bit longer but still managed to see him again that night as he came out onto the balcony

The Posthumous Michael Jackson World

Now that we have lost Michael, our world has changed. When Michael was here, it was simple, we loved Michael, we supported him in his various projects and releases, we stood by him during his trials and tribulations. His family / siblings were just on the periphery of our world. They were tolerated but largely ignored, Michael was our one and only priority.

Now this new posthumous world has turned rather complicated. So to clarify things for people who are wondering where I stand
I do not support the Jackson Family, any of their projects or releases or events. I have not read or bought La Toyas book or Jermaines book. I was against the “tribute” concert in Wales. I am against the brothers reunion tour. I have lost all respect for Katherine and do not agree with decisions she has made regarding the upbringing of Michael’s children. I have not watched any of the events or tv programes that the children have appeared on.

Michael & New York September 2001 The Truth

Interesting how stories are twisted and turned, urban myths created and believed as fact. One that has caught my eye recently is a story which many seem to believe as true. Apparently many fans believe Michael was supposed to be at The Twin Towers World Trade Centre on the morning of September 11 2001, when it came under attack from terrorists who hijacked planes and fly into it it.

This is in fact FALSE and untrue
September 2001 was Michael Mania in New York. It was soo crazy, YOU ROCK MY WORLD had been “leaked” to a radio station, Michael made a surprise appearance at the VMA’S with NSYNC and then the 2 huge concerts friday September 7 and Monday September 10 2001.

The morning of Tuesday Spetember 11, about 40 fans were outside the PALACE HOTEL, where Michael and his children were staying, along with his staff and dancers and musicians. Michael had arrived back at the hotel late the night before, about 1am. Many fans including myself went to the hotel after the concerts, the excitement and happiness of the concerts carried on to an impromptu fan party afterwards.

9AM and our world changed forever

That day still haunts me, and all the other MJ fans, who were there for the 2 MSG concerts.

Me and my friends were supposed to fly home to Ireland that day. We had checked out of our hotel early in the morning and dragged our luggage to Michael’s hotel, where we had planned to spend the day until going to the airport in the evening for our flight. We knew we probably would not see Michael before we left, we just wanted to spend our last hours in New York with the other fans. Michael’s usual routine when on a public trip was to not appear in the mornings, especially if he had been out late the night before. No matter whether he was in London, New York or any other city on a public trip, he would only schedule business meeting, shopping trips, theatre trips etc in afternoons or evenings. Regular hotel fans knew this, and most would only turn up to the hotel from 12pm onwards. There is no way Michael would have been going to The Twin Towers on the morning of the Terror Attacks.

At about 9 am I decide to go to the deli for breakfast for us and that’s when people started screaming and pointing to the sky and our lives changed forever.

We are the lost stories of September 11, the MJ fans and all the tourists trapped in a city under attack, cut off from the outside world, scared to stay in our hotels but also scared to go outside, not knowing even when we we could fly home, with no money to sometimes buy food, trying to call home, but not being able to cos the phones where not working, conflicting info about flights from airlines and embassy’s and all the while hearing the endless emergency services sirens, and looking downtown and seeing the smoke and smelling it in the air………

Everyone focuses on what happened at Ground Zero, but the whole city was affected. Those of us, tourists and locals of New York, who suddenly found ourselves trapped in a city at war, no way in, no way out, as Manhattan went into lock down

We couldn’t even ring home for 6 hours to let our families know we were safe, as all the phone lines went down. We had no money and had to get money wired to us, as we had no idea when we would get home.

Fighter planes were cris crossing the skies, National Guard Tanks patrolling the streets.

The never-ending sirens, hour after hour, day after day…..

Every building had continuous evacuations, we went to bed at night knowing there was a possibility the sirens would go off and we would have to run….

conflicting information from embassy’s and airlines, no one knowing when the airports would be open….

the streets deserted, Times Square silent with the billboards turned off, hardly any taxis, and those that were on the streets reluctant to take fares in case the had to go off the Island and wouldn’t be allowed back…..

The smell of smoke in the air, people wearing masks as they were afraid of breathing the smoke

Cars, emergency vehicles and firefighters in the streets covered in dust…….

Together we got though it, all the MJ fans togther, making sure everyone was ok, sharing flight info, food and making sure everyone had somewhere safe to spend the night.

Those were special times. And one special person made it just a little bit easier. The knowlege that Michael cared and was making sure we were ok when he didnt have to, made each day we were stranded just that bit easier to get through.

At about 1pm on September 11 Michael and his children left the hotel. They were taken by Police escort out of the city. They did not have any luggage with them, they did not check out of the hotel, they just left. Michael and his children were taken to safety in New Jersey, where they remained for a few weeks. He most certainly did not have a wild bus journey across America with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando the day of the Terror Attacks.

What most people dont know is that after Michael was taken to safety in New Jersey, he told his bodyguards, to stay at the hotel to look after us. All the fans stranded in New York continued to meet at Michael’s hotel even after he left. Every day the bodyguards would come out to make sure we were ok. Michael told them to use the hire cars to take us places if we needed to go somewhere. Michael told them to let fans who had no where to stay, to stay in his hotel rooms. When they came out to see us, Michael would call them on the phone and he would hear us thanking him. The bodyguards would bring us food from the hotel, and helped us with contacting airlines and embassy’s. Michael told them to stay in New York until ALL the International fans outside the hotel had gone home.

I managed to get out on the first flight to Ireland when the airports opened. Most fans were not that lucky. I was stranded for 5 days, but most fans were stranded 7 or more days. When the airports opened and Michael heard fans were having difficulty getting on flights, he sent a tour bus to the hotel to give the fans still stranded a treat. About 40 fans were there when the bus turned up with no warning. The fans were taken by the bodyguards out of New York, to New Jersey, where Michael was. They went to the cinema, had a meal, and went shopping in HMV. They spent the night in the bus, parked in the car park where Michael was staying. The next morning, they were taken back to New York.

The urban myths about Michael and September 11 need to stop, this is the truth of what happened, from someone who was there

I’m Not Like Other Fans

There’s something I have to tell you, I’m not like other fans….

One thing I learned from Michael, was that its ok to be different, its ok to think outside the box and go against what society deems as normal. When Michael was alive, for me this meant following my heart and travelling to see Michael. During those years, when the world had turned against him, I found the courage to let my heart see the truth and the beauty of the real Michael. When I was with the other fans, I wasn’t alone any more, for a few short days, I would be surrounded by others who felt the same way, and we became like family, uniting in our love for Michael. It didn’t matter that society looked on us and weird and strange, we shared a common bond and it gave us the strength to be different and unique and not to allow societies prejudices to stop us achieving our dreams.

When Michael left us, our world changed forever. Suddenly our little world rapidly increased in numbers. Suddenly those of us who had formed a community, both online and in real life during the last 10 years of Michael’s life, became the minority. We were swamped and pushed aside by the huge numbers who “found” Michael due to the huge media interest his death had created. We found ourselves in a world we did not recognize. These post June 2009 fans had no knowledge or understanding of our world. They had not shared our experience and so could not understand our grief. As there was such a huge influx, they all bonded due to their common interest, they had all turned to the fan community to cope with their grief and had found huge numbers who were in a similar position.

Now 2 and a half years later, these post June 2009 fans are the majority. It is THEIR views & opinions which are now how the fan community live by. If you don’t conform to THEIR views, if you dare have a different viewpoint, you are mocked & ridiculed, pushed aside, branded a hater, and made to feel not welcome.

Just like before, when society didn’t understand our love for Michael, I dare to be different and go against what is now seen as “normal” in the fan community.

I don’t buy or have anything to do with posthumous Michael Jackson projects, merchandise, music releases. If Michael did not personally approve it for release, then I want nothing to do with it.

I don’t allow photos or discussion of Michael’s children on my site, either in the forum or on the twitter/facebook pages.

I don’t support any Jackson family project or event.

I don’t buy or support books about Michael written and published AFTER June 2009

I don’t have any time for people who were adults in 2009, who had no time for and knew nothing about Michael when he was alive, yet are now experts, write books about him etc.

I don’t agree with the huge amount of digitally altered photos of Michael. I feel it is extremely wrong and damaging to put Michael’s head on others bodies, to put Michael into places and situations which he never was. All this is doing is destroying Michael’s HIStory , as the real photos are being destroyed and the real events & places are being forgotten and lost.

So yes I’m not like other fans, I refuse to be a sheep, fall in line and conform and follow the rules of society / the new post June 2009 fan community. Have the courage to follow your heart, stand up for what you believe, be unique and individual, that whats Michael taught us.

2. What Do You Want Them To Do?
Leave the Michael Jackson fan community in peace and stop the destruction, spreading of false information, lying and manipulation which you have caused since June 2009.

3. Why is this important?
For nearly three years this woman has caused nothing but destruction in the Michael Jackson fan community. Her actions time and again have shown that she has no understanding or knowledge of Michael Jackson, yet she calls herself a fan group leader and actively seeks publicity in the media. All we ask is that Taaj  ceases from her actions and projects in the Michael Jackson fan community and leaves us in peace to mourn and grieve the man we lost on June 25 2009.
This petition in no way is a hate attack or harassment of Taaj , we just want her to stop harming our community and to return to her life before June 25 2009.

OOPS you have stumbled across an empty blog post
When Howard Mann became involved with Melissa Johnsons Heal The World Foundation, Taaj true to form became an avid supporter of him. She even appeared in a video on his website. But then as usual Taaj switched and from being his main supporter turned on him. This post contains a twitter conversation between Taaj and Howard Mann
