During the first few months of 1999 we heard that Michael was going to do 2 charity concerts in the summer, one in Korea and one in Germany. I rang Gloria Haydock, the president of MJNI just to ask if she knew when they would be shown on TV. OMG!!!!!!!!!!! one minute I was asking her about the concert being shown on TV and the next minute she was telling me that tickets were still available and that MJNI were also putting together fan package of flights, hotel and concert ticket!
I told her I would call her back as by now my heart was racing and I was shaking. I hadn't seen him in nearly 2 years and now Gloria was asking me how many tickets I needed. The first thing I did was ring the other members of the YANA group as I knew that they didn't know about the tickets. I couldn't believe it when one by one they all said they couldn't go!! Then finally one girl rang me back and said she could go. As it was our first time travelling to see Michael, we hadn't got a clue what to do so we decided to book onto the fan package being organised by MJNI
So we traveled to Munich with MJNI. It was a 3 day trip; we arrived in Munich on the Saturday in time for the celebration and welcome for Michael at his hotel, went to the concert on the Sunday and came home on the Monday. As it was my first time to travel to see him and I didn't know anyone else who was going I was happy to go on the fan club trip. It meant that I didn't have to worry about finding somewhere to stay or how to get to Munich. On the other hand it meant I had to leave Munich the day after the concert. Back then I had no idea of what it is like when Michael is on a public trip like this, now with experience I realize I should have done the trip myself.
A soon as we arrived in Munich I wanted to get to Michael's hotel as soon as possible. It was crazy in Munich; I had never experienced anything like it. When we got to the hotel we managed to get a space at the front of the barrier. Three fan clubs had joined together to put on an afternoon of performances to welcome Michael to Munich.
As soon as Michael arrived it was crazy. He got out of the car and started walking over to the barriers to fans. Then suddenly he was gone. Even now I still get goosebumps and I can hear the screams. That day I was part of what I had grown up watching on TV, the amazing reaction that Michael causes, MICHAELMANIA.
Afterwards as we were walking back to our hotel I had my banner with the Irish flag around my waist. A guy saw it as he walked past and asked us if we were Irish as his friend was from Ireland too. How random is that, to meet another Irish person among the huge amount of people that were there for Michael. So we went back to the barriers and talked for a while. We exchanged numbers and promised to keep in contact.
The fan I was with wasn't really interested in staying at the hotel with the fans after Michael had gone inside so we spent the rest of the evening around the shops in Munich.
The next day, as we had seated tickets, we took our time going to the stadium. We took the underground train and joined the crowds heading to the stadium. The atmosphere was amazing, it seemed like the entire city was heading to the concert.
When we eventfully found our seats, the concert had started but we hadn't missed much. In my heart I regretted not getting a standing ticket and being down at the front of the stage, but as I was with another fan who wasn't interested in that I had to just go with the flow.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, the sun shining, everyone having a great time. Some of the performers really got the crowd going and it was soo amazing to see the huge crowds of people enjoying the music.
About 4pm, something changed in the air.. OMG... Michael came on and introduced Andrea Bochelli and gave a little speech. It was insane to feel the change in the air, the way the stadium came to life when he came on the stage.
Finally after hours of waiting, it was time for Michael to perform. It is very hard to describe what it was like to be there. There was just something so magical, so special in the air. The whole stadium seemed to come alive.
Then the unmistakable start of Earth Song. Having been at the Dublin History concert 2 years before I knew that this was a very special song. As Michael went up the bridge and the pyrotechnics started we had no idea something was wrong. Suddenly when he got to the top, and the middle section fell, my heart was in my mouth. Oh my goodness, what had just happened? Was Michael alright? For a few seconds we couldn't see him, but then we saw him climb back on the stage. Something didn't feel right but he was back on the stage so he must be ok.
After Earth Song, Michael did You Are Not Alone, but something didn't feel right. The concert ended very oddly, no one knew what was happening. The fireworks started, the lights went on and an announcement about the concert being over.
We left the stadium and made our way back to our hotel. I wish we had gone back to Michael’s hotel, but the fan I was with was not interested so we just went to bed.
The next morning we left Munich with the MJNI group and found out that the bridge had fallen and Michael had been taken to hospital but was ok and was now back at his hotel.
While I was glad that I had gone on the MJNI trip for my first time away, I felt that I had missed out on a lot of things. Part of it was the person I had traveled with, as she wasn't interested in doing the same things I was. I decided that if there was another trip to see Michael, I would make my own travel arrangements and not travel with that person again.
During the rest of that year I still went to the monthly Yana meetings but hardly anyone seemed interested anymore. It felt like the the group changed after we got back from Munich. It seemed like the group split in 2 with me and 2 others thinking and acting 1 way and the others in the group another way.
I still keep in contact with the other Irish girl I met in Munich, but as she didn't live in Dublin she couldn't come to the YANA meetings.
After having such an amazing time in Munich, I came home and decided that if the opportunity came I would again travel to see Michael, but this time I would make my own arrangements.
I continued to go to the YANA meetings and also kept in contact with the other Irish girl I met in Munich.
In early 2000 we found out that Michael would be receiving an award at The World Music Awards in Monaco in May. This was my chance.
Again I asked round the members of the YANA group but yet again they all said they would not travel to Monaco. I also got in contact with the other Irish girl, Flea, and amazingly she said she was going. She told me the name of the hotel she had booked and gave me some advise about travel arrangements.
With this information I finally convinced one of the YANA group to come with me, not the same girl who came to Munich with me.
At first we tried to arrange our trip with a travel agent but that was working out very expensive. So we eventually booked our flights and hotel separate booking into the same hotel that Flea was staying at.
Looking back, what we did was crazy but at the time it was the only way we could get there. We flew from Dublin to Paris and then got the train from Paris, all the way through France to Monaco.
Arriving in Monaco we were spell bound, it was such a different world to what we were used to. We eventually made it to our hotel, checked in and went exploring to find the other fans.
We found the fans easily enough, all we had to do was follow the screams.
Outside the Hotel De Paris there were barriers set up and as usual the fans had covered the barriers with flags and banners for Michael. We found a spot, put out our banners and got comfortable.
Just like in Munich, being surrounded by fans was really amazing. There were fans from all over Europe, some who could not speak English, but everyone was there out of love for Michael.
Looking around I recognized some faces from Munich and I was just happy to be there in the sunshine knowing that Michael was inside the hotel.
Many of the fans did not stay at the barriers the whole time, but as we were new to all this and did not know many people we stayed at the barriers. Every so often we would hear that some fans had met Michael inside the hotel or that Michael's staff had been out collecting gifts but we were very shy and lost and missed out on alot.
On one of the days we joined the fans at the side of the hotel. Michael was playing peek a boo at the windows, and for nearly 2 hours the fans were singing and chanting to him and he was going from window to window responding.
My heart was in my mouth, oh my goodness, I was actually part of something I had seen on TV so many times, I just could not believe it.
The day of the awards, was really insane. We had heard that the awards would be shown on a big screen at the beach, but as we did not know where to go we just stayed at the hotel.
On our last day, we saw all the fans at the side of the hotel. We joined them behind the barriers. WOW I have never experienced anything like that. It was crazy and amazing and my heart was thumping the whole time. We managed to get quite near the hotel door. Suddenly the door opened and two bodyguards came out carrying Michael's children Prince and Paris. They were so tiny, Prince was 3 years old and Paris was 2 years old.
As soon as the fans saw that it was the children, everyone stopped screaming and calling Michael's name. It was really amazing to see this huge excited crowd fall silent, to not scare the children. They were taken to a blacked out van with their nanny. As soon as the children were safe, the hotel door opened again. WOW, the wall of noise, screams was crazy. He was wearing a red satin mask and black jacket. We thought he was heading to the same van that the children were in, but instead he went to the SMART car which was parked behind the van. OH MY GOODNESS, it was right at the barriers where we were. I tried to take some photos but we were getting pushed and squashed so much.
That was insane, and I couldn't believe how close I had been to him. Only 3 years after seeing him in concert on a huge stage I had just seen him walk out of a hotel and get into a car a few feet away from me.
After the cars drove away, all the fans followed them, running down the street. We couldn't as we had to go to the airport.
Just before we left we heard that Michael would be coming to London in 3 weeks time. Many of the fans were planning to go to London. WOW, was I insane, could I do that too? Why not, all the other fans were going to try to go.
Michael Jackson & Friends Concert Munich Germany June 27, 1999
Michael, together with other artists from around the globe performed two charity benefit concerts in June of 1999. Together these concerts raised millions of dollars for three charities; The Red Cross, UNESCO, and The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Both concerts were televised, and the final concert was aired globally over the internet!
June 27, 1999 - Munich, Germany
The concert in Munich was played at the Olympic Stadium and was modelled after the previous concert in Seoul, with many of the same performers.
Michael's set included a stage dubbed the "bridge of no return" which was a symbol for refugee children. During "Earth Song" children led each other across the bridge symbolizing the plight of refugees. At the end of the song the bridge was supposed to collapse and a tank would take to the stage as it did in the HIStory tour production of "Earth Song". Unfortunately, during the concert an accident occurred with the prop and Michael was slightly injured.
The bridge that Michael was standing on separated too soon, and the middle section fell into a pit in the stage. Michael climbed out of the hole and carried on with his performances of "Earth Song" and "You Are Not Alone" with no apparent injuries. (Later Michael did go to the hospital and was reported to have suffered bruising, and minor burns).
Performances in the Munich concert were played by Michael Jackson, Patricia Kaas, Steven Seagal, Status Quo, Spirit of the Dance, H.O.T, S.E.S, Luther Vandross, Vanessa Mae, Boys II Men, Slash, Andy Lau, The Scorpions, Philipp Kirkorov, Coco Lee, and Blackstreet.

Michael Jackson & Friends on the BBC 4 July 1999
Highlights from last Sunday's concert were shown on British TV last night. Unfortunately for British fans unable to go to Munich or to access the German ZDF TV station on satellite last weekend, only one song from Michael's thrilling performance was televised last night!
The program opened with an impressive list of the artists names appearing, superimposed over a picture of Michael in a white shirt and black trousers standing in a spotlight. This was followed by the following title, "MICHAEL JACKSON & FRIENDS" In aid of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund with proceeds going towards the children of Kosovo.
The opening act was the British rockers STATUS QUO who belted out their hit “Sweet Caroline".
Next on were the British all girl foursome ALL SAINTS who sang " Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir? ", which most of the crowd sang along with, obviously a well known song.
BOYZONE gave their support to the children, by singing “You Needed Me! ". The group appeared minus Steven Gateley.
ANDREAS BOCELLI sang a moving song in his beautiful voice. Even if most of the audience didn't understand Italian, the emotion in his voice was all that was needed to convey the sentiments of the song. He was accompanied by a choir and a group of violinists.
LUTHER VANDROSS was the next artist to grace the stage. He gave the crowd good eye contact, and looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself and was pleased to be one of Michael's " Friends ". He gave the crowd the thumbs up and peace signs, acknowledging their support and enthusiasm. He sang, “Never Too Much ".
ZUCCHERO was accompanied by female musicians made up of violinists, and a cellist, plus drums, keyboard and he played guitar. He sang an emotional song about “My Love, Someone like You!” He is able to convey feelings of deep emotion with his gravely singing voice.
The next act was BARENAKED LADIES whose style was in strong contrast to all of the previous artists. They gave an enthusiastic performance!
Famous ex- Beatle and Liverpudlian RINGO STARR was next up, accompanied by ALAN PARSONS & JACK BRUCE. He opened his stint by saying to the crowd, “Thank you for coming, it's for a good cause - it's for the children! Get ready to do some singing! " In his own inimitable style he gave a great performance of " With A Little Bit Of Help From My Friends ". The crowd all sang along with him and Ringo really got the crowd ‘going’!
The next act was Vanessa Mae. What a polished, professional and talented performer she is! She welcomed the crowd by saying, “Hello Deutschland! Hello the World! I would like to thank everybody here, boys, girls, ladies and gentlemen, for all your support for the Red Cross and all the wonderful charities involved in tonight's concert. Me, Vanessa Mae, I'm so excited and so happy to be part of the show - so let's get on with the music & just one thing, which is very, very important I want to say to you here in Germany, Zee zen under Vunderbar Publico! “She then launched into a rousing performance full of energy and inspiration.
ANDRE RIEU - the violinist - delighted the crowd by playing a Viennese waltz and further back from the from pit, where most of Michael's fans were trying patiently to wait for THE MAIN MAN, it was possible to see couples in the audience waltzing together! He and his group of musicians, who were all dressed in 19th Century costumes, looked as though they were enjoying every moment of their performance. During an interview for ZDF which was shown last weekend, Andre Rieu explained that he has a deep respect for Michael Jackson, his many talents plus his contribution to music. Compliments indeed from such an accomplished musician.
SPIRIT OF THE DANCE followed him, performing their Irish inspired dance.
The finale was none other than THE MAN himself. “Earth Song “being a more than fitting ending to this concert for the children. Michael's performance and interpretation of “Earth Song " just gets better and better every time he performs this humanitarian and environmentally inspired plea, to all of us to save the Earth .... and to make it a better place. The gift of a flower - a lily - given from the hand and heart of a child to a soldier, seems to be asking the adults to save our world for the future generations.
It also portrays a true respect of children and their right to a happy, carefree life and childhood, on a healthy and well cared for planet. We owe the children that much. This song is a true expression of Michael Jackson's kind heart and the World should be honoured to have such a remarkable man, capable of giving performances such as this and of creating such inspirational music and art, as one of us! Michael composed the music and wrote this hard-hitting song ... it's more than just a song; it's a message to the world, to stop and think.......
What More Can I Give?
The expression and symbolism expressed in the outstretching of Michael's hands towards the audience, at the end of the performance may be saying: In our performance tonight, we've tried to show you, the people of the World, what we've done to it, through devastation, greed and war. We're all guilty of a lack of respect towards or responsibility or care for Mother Earth. We've tried to show you how the gift of love can change what we've done and what we CAN do to make a change.
It's time for us all to accept responsibility, what are you going to do about it?
The concert ended with a single spotlight beaming down on Michael as he stood centre stage with his hands outstretched, his head tilted backwards and his eyes closed. Behind him stood the refugees and soldier, shell-shocked, weary and tired - but safe!
Earlier in the ZDF televised concert from last weekend, an Israeli or possibly Turkish artist named NOA appeared with PETER MAFFEY's band. She sang the following words,
“We ask What More Can We Give?
And the answer is
Everyone gives a little bit
And together we create a world of love! "

Nobody's disputing that Michael Jackson performed Sunday (June 27) night at his Michael Jackson And Friends: What More Can I Give? Charity concert in Munich, Germany. However, what happened after the show is a bit of a mystery.
Reports say Jackson was taken to a local hospital after the concert ended, but the reason for the trip is up in the air. Reuters reported he was suffering from exhaustion and "circulatory collapse," while the Associated Press and the BBC reported that he was slightly burned by some onstage fireworks. All three cited sources saying Jackson was discharged a few hours later, and that there wasn't anything seriously wrong. Adding to the mystery, one of Michael Jackson's many fan-based websites said the singer fell more than 25 feet when part of his staging collapsed. The report went on to say that after being examined, Jackson was discharged from the hospital, but then suffered a "nervous breakdown" and had to spend Sunday night under doctor's supervision at the hospital.
Here's the real story, according to Jackson's office: The singer's representatives say that the staging did indeed malfunction during the "Bridge Of No Return" performance piece, and that Jackson did fall. He finished the song he was singing, performed his encore, and was taken to a local Munich hospital. An examination revealed Jackson suffered bumps and bruises, but no broken bones, no "nervous breakdowns," no burns, and no "circulatory collapse"--the only exhaustion he had was his usual level after a performance. As for the concert itself, approximately $1.6 million was raised for the three charities--UNESCO, Nelson Mandela's Children's Fund, and the International Red Cross.

Michael Jackson World Music Awards ACCEPTANCE SPEECH MAY 10 2000
Michael Jackson received the "Male Artist of The Millennium" Award at The World Music Awards in Monte Carlo. He accepted the award personally and was introduced by Prince Albert of Monaco.
Prince Albert:
I am very pleased to present the 2000 Millennium Award to an artist whose music, generosity and unmatched showmanship has lent colour and brightness to the 20th century. A thousand years from now, when the history of popular music is examined, no single performer will be as remembered and celebrated as Michael Jackson. It's rare for a child performer to be successful in his adult career and then still for that career to take off into the stratosphere as Michael's did. And at the close of the century he has sold more records around the world than any single artist in the history of the medium. His influential song "We Are The World" and his international Heal The World Foundation are just two of his many charitable efforts that have raised millions of dollars for hundreds of important causes. Simply put, Michael Jackson's influence on entertainment, on charity and in fact our entire culture is absolutely immeasurable. As we enter the 21st century, we can look forward to even more outstanding achievements in music and feature films from this incredibly talented artist. It’s been a privilege to witness Michael's dazzling journey over the years which has transformed him from a singer to a superstar and from a charming little boy to a dignified man.
(Video intro to Childhood and Beat It. Michael appears behind a white curtain. The curtain goes up and Michael glides forward on a little catwalk. Then he walks onstage wearing a head microphone. He shakes hands with Prince Albert.
Prince Albert: It is an honour and privilege to present the 2000 Millennium Award to Michael Jackson.
(Prince Albert hands the award to Michael Jackson)
Michael Jackson: Thank you very, very much Prince Albert. I am incredibly honoured to have been chosen to receive this award. I'd like to thank The World Music Awards and especially the fans.
(Screams from the crowds)
And you are the reason..... you are the reason, why I continue to do what I do. I've been performing....
(A fan shouts “I Love You Michael", Michael smiles)
I love you too. I love you. I've.. I've been performing since I was five years old, so I haven't had what you call an ordinary life, but I've been blessed with so many extraordinary opportunities and so many wonderful, wonderful friends all over the world, that I wouldn't change a minute of it, really. I love you more. And I’m so proud to thank.. I thank God, and I'm so proud that God gave me the gift of song. And the world gave me the opportunity to be heard through music. And it’s because of moments like this I can say with all my heart that I am very proud to be an entertainer.
And.... You Aint Seen Nothin Yet!So urce:http://www.mjfanclub.net/home/index.phpoption=com_content&task=view&id=631
